The voice of Atlantic Beach property owners

Atlantic Beach, South Carolina is the last incorporated, Black-governed oceanfront beach town in the United States, a place of tremendous historical and cultural significance. Our community works tirelessly to preserve its character and keep it from being lost to the large-scale condo and commercial development that erased so many other historically Black beach towns.

STARD, Supporters of the Tyson Ancestral Restrictions on the Deeds, organizes around the restrictive covenants established by the town’s founder, George W. Tyson, in the 1930s, covenants that allow one residential dwelling per lot along the oceanfront and give property owners a shared voice in how the town grows.

We advocate for residential development in line with the Tyson deed restrictions, a walkable main street along the 30th Street corridor, and a coastline that stays unmarred by massive condominiums and hotels blocking the view of the Atlantic.

Yes to houses on the beachfront, no to high-rises on the beachfront
Our position: yes to homes, no to high-rises on the beachfront.
What We Protect

Smart growth, rooted in heritage

Preservation

Safeguarding the Tyson deed restrictions and the town’s natural and cultural heritage so Atlantic Beach’s independence, landscape, and history endure for future generations.

Environmental Impact

Preventing the runoff, pollution, habitat loss, and dune destruction that high-rise overdevelopment brings to a small beachfront community.

Infrastructure Impact

Protecting residents from the strain large-scale construction places on local roads, services, and the quality of life that drew people here.

Strategic Planning

Working with civic planners, historians, and environmentalists on development that complies with the law and fits the natural character of Atlantic Beach.

The Community’s Voice

Families, property owners, and neighbors standing together to keep Atlantic Beach independent, historic, and whole.

The Legacy of Live Music

Where the music played all night

Atlantic Beach was the premier coastal resort where Black musicians lodged while performing across the segregated South. After their gigs, the town filled with the finest jazz, blues, and soul late into the night.

STARD honors that legacy by sponsoring flagship events that embrace the town’s history as an entertainment destination, support the local economy, and give artists from near and far a stage.
